Marcella LeBeau Elementary School
Marcella LeBeau was born in October 1919 in Promise, South Dakota, on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. Throughout her remarkable life, she served as an elder, politician, nurse, and military veteran. In 1942, LeBeau earned her nursing degree from St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, South Dakota, and initially worked as a nurse in Pontiac, Michigan.
Driven by a profound sense of duty, she enlisted in the United States Army Nurse Corps in 1943 to serve during World War II. LeBeau was stationed in France, England, and Belgium as part of the 76th General Hospital Unit, where she provided critical care to soldiers, including those injured during the Battle of the Bulge. She held the rank of First Lieutenant when she completed her military service.
Following her distinguished military career, LeBeau continued to serve her community as a nurse for 31 years. She was also an active member of the Cheyenne River Tribal Council and received numerous awards throughout her life in recognition of her contributions.
Marcella LeBeau passed away in 2021 at the age of 102, leaving behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and resilience. Reflecting on her life’s work, she once said, “It was the greatest honor of my life to serve.” Her life and accomplishments continue to inspire and serve as a testament to a life dedicated to service and leadership.
